May 2024 The generosity continues...After a recent board meeting the BookMarks of Marion Public Library volunteer group presented Marion Public Library with a check for $20,000. The BookMarks Friends of the Marion Public Library’s mission is to be the fundraising arm of the Marion Public Library. Since its founding in 2015, The BookMarks has raised and donated $154,600 to the Marion Public Library. As the library building ages, costs continue to rise, and the library seeks better ways to adequately serve vulnerable populations, the BookMarks of Marion Public Library works to raise money to support solutions, programming, and services. Making your Marion Public Library a more vibrant community entity. As the annual book sale was happening, I could easily see the hard work of the many, many volunteers it took to make the fourday fundraiser happen. When we say volunteers around the Library, top of mind consists of those who work the BookMarket, their board members, and the great group of people who work the book sale. As we put together our Volunteer Celebration for next month, we will include our Library Board membs, the BookMarks board members, BookMarket workers, and book sale and event volunteers. Plus those high school and college students who have added up significant hours during their involvement with the recent On The Road Eclipse programs, our robotics programs, and the many other programs of the Library. We are so thankful for the many volunteers who find Marion Public Library to be their worthy cause. If you are interested in donating a few hours, days, and even weeks of time to either the BookMarks organization or the Library, stop by the front desk for a volunteer application. All of these subjects and more will be addressed in our 60+ digital literacy classes designed to guide participants through real-world hands on learning examples. This learning opportunity for those age 60 and over is done in cooperation with Marion County Council on Aging. Second session classes will begin June 21. Participants will pick one of two times of the day and commit to the 6 weekly sessions. Classes will be limited to 10 students. This second set will be offered June 21- July 26 with registration starting May 20. Stop by and pick up a flyer detailing the classes and when to register. DATABASE CHANGES American Sign Language now available Just as we like to continually update our collection of library books, we also try to keep our database collection fresh! We will be losing access to one database, but are gaining access to a new source that has not been previously part of our collection. Due to a change in the statewide contract, the libraries in Ohio will no longer be collectively offering access to the LinkedIn Learning resource. This has been a great resource for many Ohio library cardholders, and the Marion Public Library is grateful to the Ohio Public Library Information Network for being able to offer access to Ohioans for several years. Library cardholders can still use LinkedIn Learning for free until June 30, 2024. We are excited to announce a new database offering, ASLdeafined.com, which is now available for all Marion Public Library cardholders to use. ASLdeafined is a comprehensive online platform that teaches American Sign Language. It is a great resource for anyone interested in learning ASL. This database offers over 300 themed video lessons, an 18,000+ ASL video dictionary, and a mobile app all designed to provide effective learning experience. Users will be able to explore basic to advanced ASL signs and grammar, learn essential vocabulary, and practice their communication skills. With the great response to the ASL classes offered at the library in 2023 our staff believes ASLdeafined will be a useful tool for furthering those ASL skills built in our previous classes. To access ASLdeafined for the first time, users will need their library card number to verify they are a Marion Public Library cardholder. During the initial login, users will create a username and password that they can then use to access the database going forward. Marion Public Library and Let’s Read 20 have already been hard at work planning a great lineup of summer programming for kids and families based around the theme - Adventure Begins at Your Library. Summer Reading fun will run June 1 through July 31, where kids, teens and, new this year, adults will be able to sign up to earn prizes for completing reading challenges throughout the summer. Reading challenge papers with guidelines can be picked up starting June 1. Individuals can signup anytime through out the summer. Some of the scheduled engaging programs include: robotics camps for two different age groups, Animals We Love To Hate with Ohio Nature Education, Enchanted Expeditions Magic Show with Dana Hill, Dragon Training Academy, The Circus Pop!
