August 2024 Thank you to all of the patrons, big and small, who took the time to register for our Summer Reading program!!! The program’s focus highlighted the importance of keeping kids and adults reading and engaged throughout the summer. A challenge between Adult Services and the Youth Services created a fun rivalry for our staff. Registrations for the adults and the kids varied weekly. One week the adult registrations were ahead, and the next the kid registrations were ahead. As the weeks progressed, the hair colors started to bloom and patrons started to notice. Near the end, we exceeded the director’s requested goal of 1,887 registrations. As we wait for the final totals to come in, we are pretty sure we Yep, I did it. I colored my hair for the cause. Lifelong learning and the love of reading blossoms with regular Library visits. As you know, we added the Adult Reading Challenge to the Summer Reading program this year after getting requests to do so from past years. And why not? There are adults who bring the youngsters in to get registered and they are the ones to emulate the habit of reading. So I challenged the staff to reach new heights. I threw out an improbable challenge number. If registrations reached 1,887 (1887 was the year Marion Public Library was founded), I would get outside my comfort zone and color my hair. To my delight(?), staff exceeded the goal and did a fantastic job making sure every person they encountered knew about the Summer Reading program, about the staff challenge, and was registered into the Summer Reading program. Bottomline – the ultimate program success is encouraging the love of reading and lifelong learning by visiting the Library and using your library card to continue to do so. SUMMER READING HAIR CHALLENGE gets community to take action/register and read DIRECTOR’S NOTE Gary Branson will see over 900 kids and 1,020 adults who participated. Additionally, this year’s programs were very popular and drew families to fill the program room to capacity more than once. Many kids have completed and returned their reading log sheets. Those who haven’t turned in logs, have until August 10 to do so to claim their prizes. As for the adults, the winner of the Kindle Fire 10HD Tablet has been drawn from the hundreds of entries received. A special thank you to the Marion businesses who generously donated prizes this year, and to the Marion Community Foundation Janis & Greg Swepston Family grant that helped underwrite the cost of the live programs.

An extended virtual silent auction fundraiser featuring old library chairs and stools repurposed by local artists and turned into wonderful pieces of art based on books. All current and former Marion County residents are invited to submit a design for possible selection. There is no prize money involved - this is purely about raising money for one of Marion’s local jewels, our Marion Public Library. Artists have freedom with your designs. Contemporary, modern, and abstract designs are allowed and encouraged for variety as well as use of any medium. Consider, also, this is a project to boost the awareness of the Marion Public Library.
