How have you liked our author programs this past year? In our effort to stay focused on our lifelong learning mission, we have been working to connect authors and readers throughout the year. I am very pleased to see how well our community responded to our author visit programs. I have challenged our committee of librarians to plan what our 2025 author visits will look like. As of this printing, we currently have a couple of great additions to the schedule. Details are still in the works, but I wanted to let the William Kent Krueger and Linda Castillo fans know that they will both be visiting Marion Public Library in 2025. Krueger is the author of the Cork O’Connor Series with Spirit Crossing being the newest release. The series has won several awards over the years. Castillo won the Daphne du Maurier Award and the Holt Medallion for her writing. Her newest release is The Burning. Stay tuned to our website for more info as we finalize plans: Marion Library.org/authorseries BOOKMARKS HOST JANE SMILEY OCT. 18 Pulitizer Prize winning author for Speaking Volumes DIRECTOR’S NOTE Gary Branson Smiley is the author of numerous novels including A Thousand Acres, awarded the Pulitzer Prize, and the Last Hundred Years Trilogy: Some Luck, Early Warning, and Golden Age. The Library has added three new titles to the collection: HGTV, Pioneer Woman, and Wild Ohio. Additionally, Sports Illustrated has reinstated publishing after pausing for a few months. The latest issue of each title is available for reading in the library, and older issues of each title are available to borrow for three weeks. Older issues are kept on the shelf underneath the display – just lift up the display shelf to find them! Don’t forget - the library also offers digital access to many of your favorite magazines via the Libby App! You can borrow and download the magazine to read on your device for seven days. Users are able to discover and read past issues of the magazine by selecting a title and then tapping “All Issues.” A great feature for those who don’t want to miss a new issue of their favorite magazine is the “Subscribe” option. This allows you to automatically be notified and borrow the latest release of your favorite titles when the issue is added to the digital library. Magazine issues are added to the “Magazine Rack” in your “Shelf.” The library’s digital magazines are always available, meaning you will never have to wait, or place a hold, to read a copy. Additionally, there is no limit to the number of magazines you can borrow through Libby. For assistance accessing the digital library and using the Libby app, stop by the library and ask a library staff member. In-person classes for using Libby are offered throughout the year; check the library’s event calendar for the next class! BOOK DISCUSSIONS, BOOK CLUBS resources for book clubs October is National Reading Group Month! Joining a reading group, aka a book club, can be a great way to connect with new people, learn new things, gain a new perspective, and enhance your reading experience. The library offers several opportunities each month for readers to connect with our fiction and nonfiction book discussions and Book Show-and-Tell. Each month the library has a different fiction and nonfiction book available for checkout, and even if you cannot make the discussion on the respective Tuesday evening, you are encouraged to borrow and read the book on your own. The Book Show-and-Tell, takes place on the fourth Tuesday of each month, and here readers come together to simply share what they have been reading lately. This is perfect for anyone who wants to talk about books they’ve read without having a reading assignment. If you are part of a book club that meets elsewhere in the community, the library has a few resources to assist you. The library offers Book Discussion Kits which are sets of books that have at least 8 copies or more. Borrowing one of these kits makes it easy for every member of your club to have a copy. These kits are typically located in storage, so please place holds for the sets online, or ask at the main desk for the entire set. A list of titles available can be found on the library’s website: MarionLibrary.org/bookdiscussionkits Another great resource the library offers for book clubs is the BookBrowse database. Book clubs can use BookBrowse to find suggestions for their next fun read, as well as advice for running a book club, and discussion questions for some titles. BookBrowse offers advice on starting a book club, leading discussions, and handling difficult topics of conversation. Some of the books included on BookBrowse also have reading guides/discussion questions that are available to print and use. However, if your club has chosen a title that BookBrowse does not have a set list of questions for, BookBrowse offers a list of 36 generic questions that are good for any book. To access BookBrowse and other databases, visit the library’s website: MarionLibrary.org/dbases LIFELONG LEARNING PROGRAMS Take a deeper dive with ALL sessions The ALL (Adult Lifelong Learning) programs begin October 10 with twelve classes that take a deeper dive into a variety of intriging subjects.
