BOOK DISCUSSIONS, BOOK CLUBS resources for book clubs October is National Reading Group Month! Joining a reading group, aka a book club, can be a great way to connect with new people, learn new things, gain a new perspective, and enhance your reading experience. The library offers several opportunities each month for readers to connect with our fiction and nonfiction book discussions and Book Show-and-Tell. Each month the library has a different fiction and nonfiction book available for checkout, and even if you cannot make the discussion on the respective Tuesday evening, you are encouraged to borrow and read the book on your own. The Book Show-and-Tell, takes place on the fourth Tuesday of each month, and here readers come together to simply share what they have been reading lately. This is perfect for anyone who wants to talk about books they’ve read without having a reading assignment. If you are part of a book club that meets elsewhere in the community, the library has a few resources to assist you. The library offers Book Discussion Kits which are sets of books that have at least 8 copies or more. Borrowing one of these kits makes it easy for every member of your club to have a copy. These kits are typically located in storage, so please place holds for the sets online, or ask at the main desk for the entire set. A list of titles available can be found on the library’s website: MarionLibrary.org/bookdiscussionkits Another great resource the library offers for book clubs is the BookBrowse database. Book clubs can use BookBrowse to find suggestions for their next fun read, as well as advice for running a book club, and discussion questions for some titles. BookBrowse offers advice on starting a book club, leading discussions, and handling difficult topics of conversation. Some of the books included on BookBrowse also have reading guides/discussion questions that are available to print and use. However, if your club has chosen a title that BookBrowse does not have a set list of questions for, BookBrowse offers a list of 36 generic questions that are good for any book. To access BookBrowse and other databases, visit the library’s website: MarionLibrary.org/dbases LIFELONG LEARNING PROGRAMS Take a deeper dive with ALL sessions The ALL (Adult Lifelong Learning) programs begin October 10 with twelve classes that take a deeper dive into a variety of intriging subjects.
